In the 6th century, paper came to Japan and soon after, the art of origami began!
Origami is the "westernised" pronunciation, it comes from the words "Oru" (to fold) and "kami" (paper).
Origami used to be for people of the upper class because paper was expensive. It evolved into a cultural practice as it became more popular, and paper became more affordable.
Shinto weddings would use paper butterflies as a part of the ceremony.
Samurai used "noshi" (an origami creation) as good luck charms.
Origami became (and remains) a popular gift and souvenirs in Japan, and a really fun thing to do!
This week's challenge is to fold some origami! There are lots of videos and pictures of instructions which you can find on google or pinterest, and I have included some here!

In Japan, there is a legend that a person who folded 1000 paper cranes would be granted a wish. This week, try and fold your own crane (you don't have to fold 1000!)
